I was reading an article about American ex-pats in Thailand and it looked inviting. My wife and child had both died and I have no relatives at all. All I had in New Orleans were friends and memories and, of course, the wonderful lifestyle of American's least generic city. The more I thought about the move and read up on it, the more appealing it became. I was particularly attracted to the conditions in Ajijic, Mexico.
In researching the area, I found a Unitarian Fellowship and made contact with them. They were enormously helpful in lots of emails back and forth. The next step was to go take a look and I flew down in August and spent a week in Ajijic. It was just what I expected and I returned to Now Orleans and spent the next month preparing to move to Mexico.
This turned out to be more complicated and difficult than I ever imagined and the help of Trevor Nall and Josh Joseph was invaluable. I sold everything, shipped a box to Mexico, packed two suitcases and flew to Guadalajara on September 24th. I had rented a house and arranged for transportation from the airport to Ajijic when I was there in August. Now I'm sitting in that house, writing this, watching a movie on Netflix and listening to the thunder in the mountains.
